John Butler is an icon.
As one of Australia's most prolific independent artists, Butler is also a political activist, environmentalist, and a master of string instruments, deep grooves, and heartfelt lyrical reflection.
He has never strayed far from his roots as a street musician in Fremantle and has remained true to his indie core. A statue in his hometown commemorates his early success, when he sold 3,500 self-funded cassettes. His rich catalogue of iconic hits spans over a quarter of a century and includes signature songs like the radio anthems “Zebra” and “Better Than,” as well as his explosive instrumental epic “Ocean.”
His music continues to travel the globe, and Butler has performed on the world’s most renowned stages—from concert venues to festivals—including Fuji Rock, Glastonbury, Coachella, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, and beyond. His high-energy live performances and revered musicianship captivate a wide audience.
In addition to his success across multiple studio albums, it is above all his instrumental solo epic “Ocean” that has played a pivotal role in the troubadour’s rise. This rousing ode, now a staple of every live show, showcases Butler’s virtuosity with unmatched intensity.
His upcoming new album “PRISM” was recorded and produced in Fremantle, Australia, with super-producer James Ireland (POND, San Cisco). The album features wild rock tracks, soulful ballads, and profound reflections on relationships, global politics, and personal matters—a testament to the sheer talent of this extraordinary storyteller and shredder.
“For me, PRISM is a cathartic release, a celebration of my solo career, a departure from the John Butler Trio, and another sonic expansion as I continue to refine my musical journey,” explains Butler. “The title reflects the sonic and emotional spectrum I wanted to explore: the full range of human experience—love, death, politics, inner and outer turmoil, and redemption.”
