Grundeis (DE) Nearly four years have passed since the Hamburg-based band GRUNDEIS (formed in 2018) released a dark post-punk firework infused with gothic and shoegaze nuances with their debut album Amygdala. The first record was exceptionally well received and reviewed by both national and international press and audiences, and the LP edition sold out within a very short time. The band took their time with their second album, Every Second an Ocean (UNDRESSED Records) — time that was especially necessary for opening up and transformation. The title of the full-length reflects the intensity and force of the second record: 14 songs, over an hour of playing time, a monumental album. On the new album, GRUNDEIS significantly expand their creative scope and despite the long runtime, never allow musical or thematic complacency to set in. Not a single track feels expendable; no song serves merely as filler. With courage and skill, the band navigates between dreamy shoegaze ballads, heavy and forceful noise rock and gritty post-punk. GRUNDEIS reveal a new level of musical and personal confidence. The deep traumas of Amygdala seem to have been overcome, although emotional depth and honesty have once again been etched into the grooves of Every Second an Ocean. In 2024, GRUNDEIS once again prove why they have been regarded as one of Germany’s hottest newcomer bands since their debut, cementing their claim as a serious international rock act.
